Mdf blanks are suitable for a wide variety of crafts from decorative painting and folkart to decoupage. Below are a few decorated samples with details of how they were created. If we can do it, anybody can. |
Small Oval Wavy Edged Plate painted with emulsion tester pots and gold acrylic highlighting in the borders. The orange artwork was cut from a large sheet of decoupage paper and pasted on top of the painted surface with PVA glue. Clear acrylic lacquer to finish. |
Medium Round Wavy Edged Plate decorated as above with yellow roses artwork blending into the border. |
Genius! Stick a load of money on your scanner printer combo and colour photocopy the lot. Don't leave any gaps between the notes or cover gaps and joins with cut out photocopied coins. Don't water the PVA down much when using normal copier paper because it will go soggy and tear easily. Use PVA to go over the top of the paper to seal it and push it into place. The PVA is good enough as a durable surface finish. |

One coat of Dulux Once on this Key Box with decoupaged roses pasted on top. This was sprayed with clear acrylic lacquer from Screwfix. A £2.99 pot was nearly enough to lacquer all the samples on this page. |
Tissue Box decorated the same as the Key Box |
This Large Fancy Bin was painted in matt magnolia emulsion leftover from the inside of the workshop. The magnolia background of the decoupage paper blended well saving a lot of cutting out. The border at the top was finished with a tube of gold edging paint. |
A Large Curved Box with lemon yellow background and gold highlighting with range of lemon artwork. |
One coat of a red oxide gouache with orange decoupage artwork pasted over. The edges and corners of the box were rubbed down to bring through the mdf underneath for an interesting distressed appearance. |
A Bent Birch Box with iridescent silver gouache and some decoupage rose artwork. The edges of the box were highlighted in pink by flicking a dry and dirty paint brush over them. Very satisfying. |
Two contrasting green tester pots on this Turned Legged Stool. The darker green brush was flicked over the legs to follow the colour of the top through the entire piece. The pink rose is a matter of taste. |
A bronze coloured base was sponged with gold paint and rubbed well back to blend the colours on this Oval Mirror. A fine nozelled gold paint tube was used to write in relief 'mirror mirror on the wall, who is the fairest of them all?' Almost antique in appearance. |
